Why should you focus on hashtags?

Hashtags might seem like random words in messages, but they can help your brand. Here are a few reasons to invest more time in hashtag usage. With hashtags, your brand can:

Increase discovery

Hashtags are like keywords. When someone wants to find messages that focus on something specific, they can use the #Explore function on Twitter, which serves as a search bar. If your post has that keyword listed as a hashtag, your post comes up in the results.

Twitter offers filters, too, so users can separate the results by the top posts, latest posts, people, photos, or videos.

Drive engagement

If a Twitter user searches for a certain hashtag, they’re more likely to sift through the results to find what they want. When they do, they’re more likely to engage with the post. So, adding a few hashtags can increase comments, likes, and shares.

Stay current

Currently, Twitter messages that don’t have hashtags seem old school. To make sure your brand remains current and isn’t perceived as out-of-touch, use hashtags.

Tips to maximize your hashtag use on Twitter

To help marketers use hashtags efficiently on Twitter, here are a few actionable tips to help you drive engagement, get content inspiration, and delight customers.

Identify industry-specific hashtags

The list above mentions hashtags for fashion and food, but many other industries have industry-specific hashtags. Use the #Explore function on Twitter to see what hashtags your brand should use.

Search your product, like #cookware or #handmadeblankets, and see what comes up. Make a list of hashtags that others are using and let it serve as inspiration for your next post.

Draw content inspo

As you search your products or industry, take note of the types of content you find. For instance, are there a lot of memes in your niche? Are photos popular? Review the content that you see and let it broaden your content production. Start small. Introduce one new content type and watch your metrics to see if it resonates with followers.

Monitor hashtags by saving searches

Are there a handful of hashtags you’d like to keep an eye on? Maybe you want to monitor a branded hashtag used by a competitor, or maybe you want to track a specific campaign hashtag you used during an influencer marketing campaign.

To monitor hashtags, search for the hashtag you’re interested in, and save the search. Twitter offers instructions to save searches

Create branded hashtags

To increase your reach, develop a handful of branded hashtags and start using them regularly. You can also add one or two to your Twitter bio.

Ideally, you want followers to start using them too. To encourage them to do so, consider hosting a contest or giveaway. One of the entry rules can be to craft a tweet with a certain hashtag in it. Remember to use #contest and #giveaway in your post, too, since they’re popularly-searched hashtags.

Don’t go overboard

How many hashtags should you add per tweet? If you add too many hashtags, tweets look cluttered and are hard to read. Twitter suggests using two hashtags per post

Remember, hashtag use isn’t the same across channels. On Instagram, for example, the average number of hashtags is 10, with several placed in the message and a short list of them placed at the end of the message.

Use hashtags in comments

Hashtags aren’t reserved for tweets only, you can – and should – use them in comments too. When you respond to a follower, add a relevant hashtag.

With this list of Twitter hashtags and actionable tips, you can make the most of your Twitter time.
