Everyone wants to go viral on TikTok, but it’s not as easy as putting up a funny video and hoping it takes off. While luck might be involved, you can also set your video up for success from the get-go. Here are a few tips for going viral on TikTok.

Research what’s already doing well

Look at what content is doing well in your niche. For BookTok videos, what are people talking about? How long are the videos? How could your videos be unique and entertaining? Understanding what’s already doing well on TikTok can help you create the best content within your niche.

In addition to content research, look up relevant keywords to use in your videos.

Use appropriate keywords and hashtags

Keywords and hashtags are an essential part of any viral TikTok post. Using specific keywords within your video’s caption will help the algorithm show your video to the right people. You’ll want to be sure the hashtags you use aren’t too generic. Generic hashtags like #FYP can work against you because you’ll be up against millions of videos. Instead, see what hashtags others use on similar videos or look on the Discover page on TikTok to see what’s already trending.

SEO, or search engine optimization, is becoming crucial on social media. Use the keywords that social media users would search if they wanted to see content on your topic or product.

Pay attention to the length of the content

Once you’ve done your research, you’ll be able to see what video lengths are doing the best within that topic. For an overall guideline, the top three lengths of videos to go viral on TikTok would be:

  • 5-12 seconds
  • 24-30 seconds
  • Over 55 seconds

Add a hook

While content relevance and length are important, one of the most important parts of a viral TikTok video is your hook. TikTok is a fast-paced social media platform, so grabbing the viewer’s attention needs to happen immediately. Maybe you do that with visual text — something funny or a shocking statement that gets people hooked enough to keep watching. This should happen within the first three seconds before your viewer swipes right past you.

Share at optimal times

Posing your videos at the best time for your audience can help your content be viewed by your intended audience. Look at your analytics on TikTok to see when people are most online, but if your audience is still too small for helpful data, start experimenting with different time slots. Posting multiple videos in a day won’t hurt you on TikTok, but make sure you post high-quality content.

Use trending sounds

Just like trending hashtags, there are also trending sounds on TikTok. Make sure your video fits within the sound, but add your flair or personal story to capture the views of those on the FYP.

Be consistent

Consistency is key on all platforms, but especially on TikTok. The app prefers consistent videos and topics. Getting a post to be viral on TikTok can take a lot of work and time, but it pays off when you start to see more than 250 views on your views.

Interact with the app

Last but not least, is to interact within the app. This doesn’t just mean scrolling — make sure you’re liking posts, sharing content and commenting. You could even take it to the next level and stitch a video that you enjoy to add to your content.

While a viral post isn’t guaranteed, these tips should help you on your journey to creating the best content for TikTok.
