If you’ve been hearing more about the Pinterest body type search, but you’re not sure how to incorporate that into your content as an influencer or a marketer, we have a few tips that can help. As of March 2024, you can now search using a tool that finds pins based on body type ranges.

Imagine going onto Pinterest and searching for a wedding dress or fashion piece, but you’re only seeing people who have a different body type or skin tone. This can be overwhelming and unhelpful for consumers, so Pinterest added body type ranges that users can adjust to see content that matches their preferences. Pinterest had previously launched a feature to allow users to search via skin tone ranges

Understanding Pinterest’s new feature

The new body type technology tool is AI-based and allows Pinterest users to search 3.5 billion images on the website based on shape, size and form. Since Pinterest is such a visual platform, the ability for users to see someone who looks like them or size-inclusive brands is helpful and needed in the industry.

To use the new feature you’ll need to:

  • Login to the Pinterest app and select the search icon
  • Type what you’re looking for (ex: winter wedding dresses)
  • Click “Body Types” and select a range from 1-4 body types
  • Once you select the same body type twice, the feature will prompt you to save that body type for future searches.

Pinterest has an Inclusive Product Team that it says helps the company create a more positive, inclusive space online. At this time the feature is only available for women’s fashion and wedding ideas but Pinterest aims to roll this out more widely later in 2024, including in men’s fashion.

Impact on search experience

The impact on the search experience will be significant, especially for brands looking to target their audience’s specific body type. It will also make the experience more enjoyable for those looking for clothing that fits their particular body type.

For example, if you’re searching for fashion outfits, once you type that into the search bar, a “Body Type” option will appear in the left-hand corner, where you can choose the body types that fit you closest.

Once you choose which body type fits you best, the search will better fit the types of bodies and clothes closest to your own, making the search more enjoyable and helpful. It’ll be easier to find brands that fit into a particular range of styles and sizes.

Shoppers looking for midsize influencers can easily find them, for example.

Impact on marketers and influencers

This innovative approach offers marketers a fresh perspective on content presentation, particularly for search and Pinterest. It empowers them to showcase their fashion pieces authentically through real models, or even diversify their pins to cater to a wider range of body types. This not only paves the way for a more inclusive representation in fashion and content but also promotes body positivity. It’s a win-win situation that benefits businesses and contributes to the overall well-being of society by fostering acceptance and mental wellness.

Brands can team up with influencers of various body types to create pins that share their products authentically.

The new feature allowing search by body type on Pinterest holds significant potential for influencers. It allows these social media personalities to broaden their content’s appeal by featuring friends or family members of varying body types. This not only enhances the inclusivity of their content but also allows them to connect with a more diverse audience. Additionally, it enables influencers to position themselves as advocates for body positivity and inclusivity, which can strengthen their brand and foster deeper relationships with their followers. In essence, this feature is a powerful tool influencers can use in their marketing strategy to promote inclusivity and engage with a broader audience.

Broader impact on digital marketing

Many consumers use Pinterest, Instagram and TikTok to search for their new favorite outfits or products. A March 2024 report from eMarketer reveals that Gen Z prefers to use social networks as their primary sources for researching brands over search engines. This shift is driven by the growing popularity of social search. EMarketer’s survey found that Gen Z prefers social content for research purposes because results are relevant (36.7%), visual (26.5%), and fun (21.4%).

Pinterest’s new search option can influence other platforms to be more inclusive. There are plenty of opportunities for influencers, marketers and companies alike to be more inclusive in their content.

In conclusion, this step in body type search on Pinterest is just the beginning. Overall, inclusivity is important to all, but especially the younger generations looking to make their stamp on the world. They want to see real people sharing real products and options that are inclusive to all, no matter size, disability, gender, etc. If you’re not already incorporating inclusivity in your marketing campaigns, it’s time to do so.
