The Milwaukee Bucks trended on social media after calling off Game 5 of their play-offs against the Orlando Magic to protest police brutality. NBA teams have been vocal about demanding justice for victims of police brutality since the beginning of their 2020 season in the NBA bubble. Players have worn Black Lives Matter shirts and even knelt during the National Anthem before games. The Bucks’ decision to sit out their game was in response to the shooting of a black man by police in a town near Milwaukee. Teams in other major league sports, like the WNBA and MLS, boycotted their games as well in protest. BrandGraph, IZEA’s social intelligence platform, recorded a spike in social media content and engagement for the Milwaukee Bucks after sports fans shared their reactions on social media to the Bucks’ decision. Players were disturbed by the shooting of Jacob Blake, a black man, by police in Kenosha, Wis. The shooting, which was near Milwaukee, is another example of police brutality that NBA teams have actively been calling out this season by kneeling with the Black Lives Matter Movement. Sports lovers took to social media to express their support for the Bucks’ unprecedented decision. Others shared posts about their confusion on the purpose of the strike. Bucks players argued boycotting their game was the best way to draw attention to the situation and to demand the officers in question be held accountable. Following the lead of the Bucks, all NBA play-off games on Aug 26 were postponed. Players across different NBA teams even toyed with the idea of canceling the rest of the play-off season. Kimberly Guilfoyle, television news personality and Donald Trump Jr.’s partner, spoke at the RNC opening night. Her speech gained a lot of attention on social media as posts poured in criticizing the delivery of her message. The RNC ended with President Donald Trump officially accepting the Republican Presidential nomination in Washington, D.C.
