The family of a Publix deli worker who died from complications caused by COVID-19 filed a lawsuit against the supermarket chain. The family alleges that their father, Gerardo Gutierrez, requested to wear a mask in late March after seeing his co-worker showed symptoms of COVID-19. According to the lawsuit, Publix denied Gutierrez’s request and also did not send the employee with symptoms home. Unfortunately, Gutierrez ended up contracting the virus and later passed away in April. Moderna is a biotechnology company that is in the race to become the first to administer an effective COVID-19 vaccine. Shortly after Pfizer announced their vaccine for the coronavirus to be 90% effective, Moderna announced that theirs was 94% effective. Their vaccine differs from Pfizer because of its longer shelf life of up to six months in a regular freezer and 30 days in a standard fridge. Pfizer’s vaccine on the other hand must be stored at minus 70 degrees Celsius or below. Moderna is now seeking authorization from the FDA to ensure their vaccine will be available for distribution in early 2021.
