Artificial intelligence is a rapidly growing industry, but research shows it’s mostly dominated by men. This WIRED article estimates that just 12% of top-tier machine learning researchers are women, leaving little room for female AI influencers. While the workforce diversity in this sector is lacking, it’s refreshing to see several women gain a strong footing on social media based on their knowledge and passion for AI. Jana Eggers 

As the CEO of Nara Logics, Jana shares what she learns about artificial intelligence, tech, and innovation with her followers on Twitter. She often recommends videos, books, and AI-related conferences from leaders in the industry. In August 2021, she launched an AI newsletter, offering subscriptions to the beta version to anyone who donated $20 or more to her Boston Marathon fundraiser, “Run Like Hale.” Her 2023 Boston Marathon fundraiser is raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Allie Miller 

Encouraging her 1.2M+ followers on LinkedIn to “artificial intelligence and tech news, insights, job advice, and hiring posts,” Allie has already hit her maximum number of connections. Allie’s knowledge is one of the most extensive in the industry; she’s the Global Head of Machine Learning Business Development for Startups and Venture Capital at Amazon and was the youngest woman to build an artificial intelligence product at IBM.

Joanna Bryson 

Ethics is a frequent topic among AI leaders, and Joanna is one of the leading experts on the subject. Not only is she a professor of ethics and technology, but she’s also a founding member of the Centre for Digital Governance. Joanna often shares AI-related articles on LinkedIn and is followed on Twitter by former President Barack Obama.

Dr. Joy Buolamwini — Poet of Code

Combining her passion for social justice and knowledge of STEM, Dr. Buolamwini founded the Algorithmic Justice League. The computer scientist frequently posts about topics such as the intersection of race, technology, and justice. Her Instagram account highlights the more visual parts of her work, including her work with the Ford Foundation on “Coded Bias” and her appearance in Vogue to highlight algorithmic bias. Rana el Kaliouby 

The accomplishments keep piling up for Rana who founded Affectiva and serves as the deputy CEO at Smart Eye, both of which are AI companies. In addition to being named a LinkedIn Top Voice for 2020, she was asked to co-chair Fortune’s Brainstorm AI conference in November 2021. Dr. Kate Crawford 

Having served as the Inaugural Visiting Chair of AI and Justice at École normale supérieure in Paris, Dr. Crawford shares her extensive knowledge of artificial intelligence on social media. Google may only have a small percentage of women working in machine learning, but Cassie, a chief decision scientist at the company, is certainly a role model – and one to follow on social.

Dr. Angelica Lim
