If you’re a TikTok regular, you’ve probably noticed the CottageCore hashtag going around. With over 8.7 billion views so far, this is one of the favorite forms of content for creators and viewers on TikTok.

But what is #CottageCore? According to the description on TikTok, CottageCore is “flower prints, knitting, plants and mushrooms.” It’s the love of living a simple life, probably somewhere out in the country or in a cottage (hence “CottageCore”) with little to no technology, living sustainably. CottageCore started gaining popularity on TikTok in 2019, but it actually started out on Instagram and Tumbler in 2017. CottageCore takes the focus off of living life to make money and instead living a life based on what makes you happy.

Actress and TV personality Keke Palmer described CottageCore as “an idealization of a rural aesthetic and escapism from the demands of the modern world.” She points out in a video that BIPOC have used it as a way to reclaim the past by reimagining the “traditional English countryside aesthetic as more inclusive.”

CottageCore has gained so much popularity because it allows you to romanticize your life, live more sustainably or just be happier with the simple things. Even CottageCore sellers on Etsy have popped up, selling the CottageCore aesthetic in everything from clothing to decor to jewelry.
