Help us name Argus

By October 1, 2007 73 Comments

I am about to let a cat out of the bag…if you like surprises don’t read further.

Still here? Ok…

Argus isn’t just an upgrade to It is a completely new concept that is radically different approach than our current model. So radical in fact that the name PayPerPost fails to accurately portray what this new offering represents.

Sure, sponsored posts will be part of this new offering, but Argus is so much more than sponsored posts. Advertisers and Bloggers will interact in a whole new way in Argus. Heck, Bloggers can be Advertisers and vice versa under the same account. The tools we will provide for buzz building, traffic generation, ranking, social interaction, transparency, disclosure and analysis of campaigns will be unprecedented. Put simply you won’t recognize this system when we launch it.

The structure of the new marketplace will be completely foreign to all current PayPerPost users. The rules are changing and you will have to make some changes in your behavior to maximize the value the platform can provide you. Some of you will like it, some of you won’t… either way it will be your decision to make.

For these reasons we have decided to launch Argus under a new name and new domain. We have spent many cycles tossing around names, searching for available domains, ripping concepts apart and have finally narrowed the list down to 4 possibilities. Now it’s time for you, our community, to step in and help us make the final decision. Here are the choices:

We want you to tell us which name you like most and why. Write a post on your blog and put a link in the comment stream here or just leave a comment (with a way to contact you). I want you to be as open as possible. If you think one or all of them suck let us know.

I am going to pick my personal favorite post or comment and send you a new iPod Nano as a thank you for your time and effort.

    Payperpost begat Argus begat bzzooka

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
I dont know if you know this but theres a dude down in Florida named Ted. Hes pretty much a party guy. Hes done a pretty good job running businesse…

  • Tina Silva says:

Hey Ted. Here’s my post in regards to these domain names.

  • Lisa says:

OMG. Seriously? Ted, y’all need to go back to the drawing board on this one. I hate to say it, but all of the names are awful. They’re not catchy, they’re difficult to spell, there’s just no PULL with any of those names. None of them scream THE NEW AND IMPROVED AND DON’T YOU EVER FORGET OUR NAMES PAYPERPOST!

Wompow sounds like something my cat horked up. πŸ˜‰

  • Ted Murphy says:

2x, Sarakastic, Mrcus, Tina thank you for your feedback.

  • Ted Murphy says:

Do you have another suggestion? I would love to hear it, just remember that the domain name has to be available and it can’t be trademarked.

  • Jon Chang says:

I don’t really like any of the names, but I’m more interested in your process to generate these possible names. Here is an great article on naming a business.

  • suni says:

wowzer. this is something else. none of those names are good. what do they have to do with argus or PPP? I would think that a firm such as yourselves would come up with some names that had BRAND value. Are you trying to rebrand PPP so the critics can’t see you as vividly? I just don’t get it.

ftr, tremblor sounds like something from the neopets website. bzzooka will never be spelled right. cloudshout makes me think of a social networking site i will never want to visit … AND wompow is so close to wampum it makes my ancestors sick.

  • Tina Silva says:

I have a few suggestions. (seeing that we are all connected via the web and ppp connecting bloggers with advertisers) (ie: it’ll leave no blog unturned) or

I dunno. Those are just suggest. I love the but I’m definitely looking forward to hearing other suggestions you guys come up with.

  • Erica says:

    Ick .. πŸ™

No. I really don’t know what else to say.

  • Tina Silva says:

LMAO Pete…ya lets get everyone to spell and remember that one. hahahaha

  • Marisa says:

Ted, honey, you know I love you and all the PPP folks and all but no, these don’t work. Everyone has told you why. If those are my options, I’ll vote for Pete’s suggestion (if he’ll dress as a pirate again at the end of the month.) πŸ˜‰

  • Lisa says:

Ted, I’ve been wracking my brain trying to come up with something, but I can never come up with anything creative. is about all I can come up with.

I know, good at complaining but craptastic when trying to come up with a solution! πŸ˜‰

  • suni says:

    I like Lisa’s idea best…

  • Tina Silva says:

LMAO… is what I suggested awhile ago in the PPP forums. hahaha

  • Lisa says:

D’oh! I guess that makes three votes for that then!! ROFL!!

  • Cass says:

if we have to pick a new one, argus unleashed. Or Pete’s name. But not those others.

  • Jennifer says:

Ted, love ya, but ew. You’ve spent the last year and a half branding the name PayPerPost… with Rockstartup, postiecon, the BCA, everything has pointed back to the name PayPerPost. I don’t understand why you would take that back now.

  • Loretta says:

Ted, I love your sense of humor.
You were kidding and this is just a creative linkbait contest, right? You wouldn’t really use those names I hope.

  • Ted Murphy says:

All of the input is much appreciated.

I know that it is hard for many of you to even contemplate going to a new domain. You have been coming to our site for a long time, typed into your web browser who knows how many times and are part of the PayPerPost family. How could the name for Argus be anything but

Argus isn’t just about sponsored posts.
Long term it isn’t even just about blogs.

Over the coming year you will see a slew of new services designed to deliver on our company mission.

“To empower everyone to value and exchange content, creativity and influence.”

Some thoughts to help frame these names:

The power of Word of Mouth advertising (WOMpow(er).com)
    Buzz generation (
Visibility in the Internet cloud (
Creating an online visibility shockwave (

I don’t know if this helps, but I hope it does. Again, I am open to other suggestions so long as they are open domains with the ability to trademark the name.

I may regret this… but I am going to through one more name into the mix, even though I shouldn’t because it is blog specific and long term I think it is too specific.

gulp. I don’t know if I want you guys to like that or not.

  • Tim says:

I like blogquake, but like you say, it’s too specific. If you’re going to do this, do it once and do it right. A good brand here ought to be just as scalable as the business model and the technologies behind it.

  • Colleen says:

Add me to the not liking it crew.

I like and I’m going to cry if you change it.

  • Lisa says:

I have to agree with everybody else. I don’t like any of them either. What’s wrong with Argus?

  • Tina Silva says:

In regards to, that’s not too bad. If you don’t want to be specific, then put something like webquake or something with web or another word for the internet as it can apply to many things.

  • Laurie says:

I vote to stick with the PayPerPost name/brand, but I’m sure that’s not going to happen. πŸ™

    Here’s my post…

  • Argus takes over PPP

Whats in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.
From Romeo and Juliet (II, ii, 1-2)

I am a big Shakespeare fanatic, so Ive heard the above quote from Romeo and Juliet many a time. Juliet is ba…

  • Mike says:

No offense by any means, but all of these are just weird. The first two aren’t real words so it’s harder to remember or spread them. Tremblor is well… seems negative and as someone else said sounds like a greeting card.

Here are a couple I came up with:

All of these seem to hit on the exchanging of content. -Obvious -If’ie, but could be used as Argus will be the starting point of the spread of the content. – Knowledge has no limits. – same as above.

Anyway, just a few I thought of, hope it helps.

  • Michelle says:

You can read my opinion by clicking on my name. HTH

  • Tina Kubala says:

I didn’t come up with any new ideas, unless you count which isn’t taken.

I’ve posted my thoughts at the link above, along with general info cause I’ve never posted about Argus before.

You did realize you opened the floor for opinions to, what, 60K bloggers? Did you think about the ramifications of that, Ted? If you did, you are braver than I thought.

  • Allan Cheng says:

    Here are my suggestions:

IBUZZGEN.COM -short and sweet “internet buzz generation” – word of mouth marketing

It’s late and I can’t think of anything else off the top of my head.

  • WBM says:

take your pick, new names picked up recently maybe one jumps out at you. Short and some are creative, most make no sense.

  • Tricia says:

My dashboards not updating so I didn’t know about this post until I hit the forums. πŸ™

I agree with pretty much everyone else- the first suggested domain names won’t work. I understand now how you came up with them but few people but marketing or SEO people would really use those terms so the abbreviations don’t click with normal website owners.

Without knowing a whole lot more about Argus it’s hard to come up with the perfect domain name. Hint hint … πŸ˜‰

going with the BIG change theme how about:

    and my fav

  • Hyder says:

    Ted, Hyder here from

All the names suck. I have a domain that might just interest you. It’s called – Let me know if you’re interested.

  • lilian says:

I am not going to make a post. Not unless there is no. 5. I.e. none of the above choice.

    1. – Ok, not so lame but sounds like a kid’s site

    2. – Sounds like warm dumpling in my Chinese dialect

    3. – When you fail to make people tremble, they tremblor.

    4. – Clouds are so girlish

Is PPP facing mid-life crisis or what? LOL. Sorry, no suggestion.

  • issa says:

i’m sorry but none of your suggestions are good (at least to me). i’m in agreement with all the others about PayPerPost or PPP already being a brandname. it would be all your hardwork down the drain after all the months you’ve spent building up the brand =(

my best suggestion is to just add up something to the PayPerPost name like or ..something like that =) at least your brand will be recognizable and at the same time, you can describe argus

  • Mr. Fabulous says:

Wait a minute! was not even considered?

    I’m crushed…

  • Sid says:

    hi TED,

Out the list that you posted,i liked the name cloudshout because the name signifies some sort of buzz being created.i had in mind a couple of names…—>signifying the positives of argus—>signifying flow of information

Well these are my suggestions, expecting the arrival of agrus soon.

    My email->

  • Hmmm…as someone who once tried to change a branded name and shot myself in the foot — and as someone who didn’t have near your kind of business — I would vote to stick to something similar. None of these names grab me, unfortunately, nor would I remember them and/or relate them to you in my mind. Lots of info swirling around, not enough room to write it all down in notebooks, so I need to be able to remember something by a name that relates to it.

I, however, like others have no suggestions, just thoughts.

  • Chris says:

I don’t want to be rude, but those suggestions are not just bad, they are wide open to some full-on mocking which could really detract from the launch.

Names ain’t my thing as you can probably tell from my blogs, but if I’m going to criticise, I guess I need to stick my neck out…..

Mind you, what’s wrong with Argus? It’s better than those 4 suggestions.

I wonder how many of these prospective domains have been purchased today….

  • Since this is such a radical shift I do not know what exactly to brand. Only a branding/marketing company could do this switch justice.

My last post was about hitting my three month goal. I just made $2,500 from you folks last month so I’m taking the week off. Please consider this my official feeling on the subject.

  • lynnx01 says:

I just hope my little side income won’t be affected after this. πŸ˜€ Cloudshout it is!

  • Joni Hudson says: most definitely he looks like he targeting his victims.

  • Ghosty says:

    They all suck.

Never underestimate the power of an established brand.

  • Nick says:

    1. (What?)

    2. (Did you get that name out of a comic book fight scene?)

    3. (Sounds like a lame super villain)

    4. (what does yelling at clouds have to do with blogging? are we all schizophrenic now?)

Leave it at payperpost or do (or any extension of that –, etc)

  • klumsi says:

I would not rename PPP. Pure and simple, just don’t do it.
PPP has history, whether it be good or bad, I think you should stick with it regardless of the whole platform being changed or not.

I think I have a general idea of what will be available in Argus but, you also said that paid posts will still be a part of the new platform, so the PPP name will still accurately describe at least part of it.

People like a fun, fresh, easy to remember name – PPP is just that and I think that changing it could be dangerous.

Besides, all of the money that would be spent changing everything over to this new name, could be better used – and saved – promoting the new platform.

  • Cheryl says:

    I have one question –
Were you all DRINKING when you came up with these?

    1. – This makes me think of GUM
    2. – Sounds like something out of a comic book fight!
    3. – Huh?
    4. – Do I even need to go here? Sounds like something an 8 year old girl came up with as a name for her My Little Pony!

And, Mike : -Obvious – yeah, obviously PORN…! You’ll get hits from all the freaks on this one! LOL!

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

  • AzDana says:

I posted this last night on my blog:

“Am I the only one at PayPerPost that likes
Imagine this… you’re walking alone through a meadow, on a path you’ve taken hundreds of times before. The flowers are blowing in the breeze and you’re enjoying a quiet private time while soaking in the familiar surroundings. Suddenly, you hear a noise that seems to come from everywhere. It rises up behind you, stands in front of you, and envelops every fiber of your being. You realize that the clouds themselves are talking loudly about you and to you. While listening to their breathtaking message, you realize that your life and the lives of many people will be forever changed from this moment on…..”

The rest of it is at

  • Ryan says:

I personally don’t mind Cloudshout as a name. I really like it actually… let me know if you DON’T use it. haha. Honestly… I don’t see whats wrong with the name Argus. Its’ much better than the other non-word names mentioned. bzzooka is way to buzzy for my liking. Something to the effect of Blogzooka would be much more timeless. But, like I said, Cloudshout is my personal favorite.

  • Tracie says:

    1. – I think of chewing gum, or getting shot with a big rocket… very wrong for this type of thing.

    2. – Now that you’ve explained it doesn’t sound AS bad… but still.. it’s bad. Very bad.

    3. – creates the thought of shock waves alright.. but not in a good way.. in a bad, “I wouldn’t want to live in California” way.

    4. – The least wrong of all the wrongness. Catchy, easier to say/read, but kind of cheesy.

    5. – earthquakes are bad… and scary

I would go back to the drawing board on this one.

  • Emma says:

Out of the four choices CloudShout is definitely the best. It’s easy to spell and remember. It will take off fast and creating a logo for it will be a breeze.

I’m looking forward to being a part of the new CloudShout!
    Cheers, Emma

  • VC Dan says:

Even though I like WOM (Word of Mouth) variations like wompow, womland, womtastic etc., I’m with the others on your follow-up post: IZEA is the best of the bunch!

…and Zumzy is fun to say ;-)…

That list above is pretty weak. I wonder why you aren’t keeping the established PayPerPost name? How

NB: That Argus logo looks very Cthulhuian…is there a Lovecraft fan in the company perchance?

  • techie says:

I know I’m late, but I thought I’d throw in that they all are pretty bad. Cloudshout is the best, but still seems to miss the mark.

Izea in the other post is the best one and could work well.

One thing no one has remembered is that you will no longer be called Posties after the name change. This will be a more than welcome change. I’ve never liked Posties and I’d much rather be called an Izeaite.

  • abelle says:

    1. = i think is fine. i’ll go for this one
    2. = what’s this? WOMan POWer? though i am a woman and will blush if complimented as powerful, no, i don’t like it
    3. = sounds like TREMBLing ORganization. u all should be scared πŸ˜‰
    4. = no, too softy. sounds like a website for children

  • Jimbo says:

If these four are the best you can come up with, I would “Pay Per Rejected Name” just to know what they were! Hmm? Deal?! Say, a buck for every other name you guys have removed from the list! Nope?! Oh, well…

I personally wouldn’t pick any of these four. They’re hard to memorise and not catchy at all. Here’s why…

“bzzooka” reminds me of teenager’s chat logs! Muhahhah, bzzooka, ur ded! lol!
“wompom” sounds like the bubblegum I wouldn’t buy! Nothing beats Hubba Bubba!
“tremblor” sounds like a brand new J.R.R. Tolkien character! A bit too much geeky, thanks!
“cloudshout” sounds like of the most boring ride of the park! You know? A pink flying hippo or something worse!

  • Tricia says:

Techie I don’t really like being called a Postie either. Did you know that advertisers on other sites are creating jobs that call the bloggers Posties now too? Very strange and not in a good way. LOL

  • Jaz says:

    1.–sounds like gum…on someone’s shoe??
2.–native american teepee or wampum maybe?
    3.–earthquake? Look out California.
    4.–shouting clouds?? oh please.

    5. Postie—breakfast cereals unite? Ah well.

Uh, sorry. I think these…suck. You asked. I have domain names for sale that look better than those. No, I don’t think I have any you want for this either.

  • Keith Cash says:

    I like the best.

Not being critical buy I like the best of the four.

But none of them excite me to go there, lik PayPerPost

    Good Luck

  • Crissy says:

God.. these are so bad. Tremblor is an obvious steal from Tumblr, the rest are just awful.

  • I liked WomPow. But then I’ve always thought Payperpost was kind of lame too. I think something with Argus is more appropriate. This kind of change always makes me nervous. It can be great and it can be disaster. But then I’m practically a hermit so who cares what I think.

  • I think cloudshout is good..! And the concept if we break down.. Shout (advertisement) is send to the clouds(blogs) and it reaches every were and rains… errr.. am getting in to too much dreaming..!

  • Sandra says:

I am a little late on commenting about this, but I figured it was good to be late given my POV. πŸ˜‰

    What’s in a name?

  • Joe says:

personally, i like, it fits that devil image a lot:) also a type-friendly name i think.

  • praveen says:

I think would be a better choice coz it has got a pow in it… this would add more power to Argus.
