Dear PPP Advertisers,

As you create new opportunities now, you will notice you have many more options when it comes to targeting or segmenting the appropriate audience. Selecting Tack, PR and Alexa ratings . . . . oh, and categories. While some of you may already be familiar with categories, we wanted to share some overall tips for you to help even further. Please let us know your thoughts as well.

First, we want to differentiate between targeting or segmenting, and being too limiting. It’s to your benefit most certainly to target an audience that would find more interest and need in your site or product. However, if you are too limiting, you may be missing out on some great potential! We nearly always suggest an advertiser choose at least five categories. Most of the opportunities we see during review can really apply to many folks (and way more than 5 categories), and there are very few that have such a thinly defined niche to warrant only 1-2 categories.

Have you considered the entire scope of whom you are targeting? Remember, our Posties will be creating content about your site or product, but they also have many readers that will view that content.

How do we at PPP determine if the Posties have met your category criteria? Well, the answer to this will support why it is so important to select as many categories as you feel are appropriate. If you have a photo sharing website, but request only Photos as the category, posts on blogs with a clear, strong focus on photos/photography will be the only ones approved. So you may be missing out on folks who want to share photos of their road trips (Travel), children (Parenting), hiking (Recreation), a classic car they’ve fixed up (Autos), etc. All very interesting topics, and potentially fantastic draws to your site. The more categories you provide, the more able we are to consider blogs that are more dynamic in their topics. If you select 10 different categories, we will happily approve a great post from a blogger who touches on 3 or 4 of those topics regularly.

Is there a benefit to selecting all categories? Sure – to broaden & maximize your audience! This provides you with a great sampling of the entire PPP blogging community. If your site or product applies to the general public, you may be better off leaving the opportunity open to our entire community.

Finally, we want your input. We are in the process of refining our category listing. We feel this will better serve the PPP community, both Posties and Advertisers alike. Our boards have been hoppin’ with great feedback from the Posties! Now we want to again encourage advertisers to let us know what, if any, changes you’d like to see in the Categories. Do you find value in combining some of the existing categories, are there additional categories you’d like to see, what categories would be attractive to you when targeting bloggers who have dynamic blogs?
